Frequently Asked questions

A list of our most frequently asked questions....

Q. What is Organic?

We have farmed Organically at Woodhorn for 25 years. Organic farming is traditional farming with a holistic approach that puts our environment, animals, team and place in the community at its centre.

We do not use pesticides, artificial fertilisers or antibiotics, preferring to work with nature not against it.

Organic farming isn’t always easy and has many challenges, but we see it as a way of life, producing food that we are happy for our families to eat whilst trying to nurture the planet for their futures.

Q: Do you use Bovaer?

A: No, we don’t use Bovaer as an additive in our cow’s feed.

Bovaer is banned under Organic standards which stipulate ‘that all ingredients/ components of a feed additive must be actively approved for use and be deemed safe and nutritionally useful for the animal”.

The Soil  Association have confirmed that the main components that make up Bovaer® are not included in the list of approved products/ compounds and as a result, Bovaer® would not be permitted under organic standards and for use in organic farming’.

Our herd’s health is of utmost importance to us, and they are fed a predominantly (95%) homegrown, organic diet based on grazed grass in the Summer and home-grown silage in the Winter.

Q: Do you sell raw milk?

A: No, we don’t currently sell raw milk.

Our milk is gently pasteurised but not homogenised to maintain it’s natural, creamy taste.

Q: What is the nutritional composition of your milk?

A: The 2024 average components of our milk (per 100ml) were:

Fat (Butter Fat): 4.27%

Protein: 3.25%

Sugar (Lactose): 4.49%

Salt: unknown but typically between 0.04% to 0.1%*

*Tesco whole milk is 0.11g/100ml of milk.

Q: Do you sell semi-skimmed milk?

No, we only sell whole milk as that’s what our cows produce!

We know that there are lots of opinions on which variety of milk has the most health benefits, but a food product is only considered ‘low fat’ if it contains fewer than 3 grams of fat per 100g. The fat composition of our milk was on average 4.27% in 2024, so we believe that the ‘full fat’ milk concept is a little misleading.

Whole milk also has a raft of other health benefits and is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals.

It provides potassium, vitamin B12, calcium and vitamin D, which are lacking in many diets. It is also a good source of vitamin A, magnesium, zinc and thiamine (B1).

Additionally, it’s an excellent source of protein and contains hundreds of different fatty acids, including conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega-3s; both are significantly higher in Organic milk due to the high level of clover and other legumes in Organic grazing and silage.

Q: Where can I find your price list?

A: Our current price list is displayed at the Cow Shed but can also be found HERE.

Although we try our hardest to maintain our prices, sometimes price reviews or increases are unavoidable due to rising costs and inflation both locally and on a global scale.

Q: Do you sell cream?

Not yet!

We do receive regular requests for organic, farm produced cream and this is an area that we’re keen to investigate further in the future. Watch this space!

Q: What are the ingredients in the milkshake syrup?

A: Our milkshake ingredients and allergens can be found HERE.

Q: Who is Organic Herd?

A: Organic Herd is an organic dairy co-operative fully owned and run by farmers across the UK who share a commitment to sustainable and organic farming. Organic Herd is the only UK buyer of milk that requires every farm to be certified antibiotic free.

The majority of the milk that our cows produce is supplied to Organic Herd who as well as distributing organic milk and dairy products nationally, also produce their own range of delicious, organic dairy products that we are proud to be distributors of in our chilled vending machine.

Q: What are your opening times?

A: The Oving Cow Shed is currently open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We do limit our opening times over the Christmas and New Year period to give our hard-working team a rest. Keep an eye on our socials for details of any closures.
